Abstract
Objective: To investigate the prevalence of the pain in the achilles tendon region among amateur badminton players in Shanghai and analyze the related risk factors. Methods: The investigation examined the prevalence and characteristics of pain in the achilles tendon region in 34 middle-aged amateur badminton players in Shanghai by questionnaire and physical examination. Results: For the middle-aged amateur badminton players under investigation, the prevalence of pain in the achilles tendon region was 41%, 21% respectively in the past 5 years and at present. The pain was generally localized in the middle of the tendon, and the symptoms persisted for 3 weeks-1 year with an average of (101±6.7) d. The prevalence of pain in the achilles tendon was associated with age (P< 0.05), but not with the body mass index (BMI), gender, frequency of movement, and the number of years engaged in badminton. Conclusions: The pain in the achilles tendon is common among middle-aged amateur badminton players in Shanghai, and the prevalence is proportional to age.
