Effect of the anterior double splint appliance treatment on skeletal class Ⅱ mandibular recession after the peak of growth and development

  • Objective To explore the therapeutic effect of the sagittal-guided twin block (SGTB) with anterior double splint appliance on patients with skeletal class Ⅱ mandibular recession after the peak of growth and development.
Methods A retrospective study was conducted on 23 patients with skeletal class Ⅱ mandibular recession after the peak of growth and development, who were treated with SGTB in Minhang Dental Disease Prevention and Treatment Institute of Shanghai. Before and after the treatment, X ray cephalometric lateral films were taken to measure parameters of soft tissue and hard tissue of maxilloface and upper airway items.
    Results After anterior double splint appliance treatment, MP-FH, SGn-FH, NP-FH, SNB, L1-MP and ANS-Me increased (P < 0.05), while ANB, U1-LI and S-Co decreased correspondingly (P < 0.01); among the soft tissue items, LLP, LLL and LL-Pos increased (P < 0.01), while FCA, ULP and Si-LLPos decreased (P < 0.05); the upper airway items included SPP-SPPW, U-MPW and TB-TPPW increased (P < 0.01).
Conclusion For these patients after the peak of growth and development, SGTB can coordinate the sagittal and vertical relationship of the maxilla and mandible, and effectively expand the sagittal width of palatopharynx and glossopharynx through advanced the mandible.
