Abstract:Objective: To explore the effect of moisture chamber spectacles on ocular surface after pterygium excision by Oculus Keratograph. Methods: A total of 40 patients (40 eyes) with pterygium were recruited and randomly divided into two groups:moisture chamber spectacles group and control group (20 eyes in each group). All cases received pterygium excision and conjunctival autograft transplantation, and tobramycin dexamethasone eye drops and 0.3% sodium hyaluronate after surgery. Patients in moisture chamber spectacles group wear moisture chamber spectacles the day after surgery. Ocular surface disease index (OSDI), noninvasive Keratograph tear meniscus height (NIKTMH), noninvasive Keratograph tear breakup time (NIKBUT), eye red analyses (nasal conjunctival hyperemia index, nasal ciliary hyperemia index, and conjunctival hyperemia index) before operations and at 1 week, 1 and 3 months after operations were recorded and analyzed using analysis of variance based on repeated measurement data. Results: Time had a significant effect on those ocular surface index (tests of between-subjects effects P<0.05). The differences of OSDI, NIKBUT, nasal conjunctival hyperemia index, nasal ciliary hyperemia index, and conjunctival hyperemia index between two groups were statistically significant (tests of between-subjects effects P<0.05); time had a significant effect on those ocular surface index (tests of between-subjects effects P<0.05). Conclusions: Wearing moisture chamber spectacles can significantly speed the repair of the ocular surface and reduce postoperative discomfort in pterygium patients.
