Progress on the role of osteocytes in bone remodeling during orthodontic tooth movement

Abstract
The osteocyte is not only the mechanosensor of the bone, it is also a responsive cell that translates mechanical stimuli into signals that modulate the activity of the bone-forming osteoblasts and the bone-resorbing osteoclasts, thereby regulating bone remodeling under mechanical loading. Studies have shown that osteocyte plays a regulatory or even dominant role in bone remodeling during orthodontic tooth movement. Understanding the functions of osteocyte may have important guiding significance for future orthodontic treatment. Based on recent studies, the role of osteocyte in induction and conduction of mechanical stress, osteocyte-mediated bone absorption and bone formation mechanism under mechanical stress stimulation are summarized in this review.
